Melissa Del Bono, the designer behind meli melo, draws inspiration from both her family’s history in Italy and the United Kingdom and her life in London. Melissa’s friends and family affectionately referred to her as “Meli,” while the moniker “meli melo” refers to an eclectic assortment of items.
Melissa grew up in a highly entrepreneurial environment and always knew she wanted to do something innovative on her own. Melissa, a native of the volcanic Aeolian island of Lipari, Sicily, took her design cues from the big wicker baskets that local women carried. Melissa, who had never been to design school, created her version of a local fisher women’s basket in 2005, giving it a more casual shape and inverting the inverted handles. The BB Bag is what happened there.
To create the prototypes for her first meli melo handbag, she tracked out the highest-quality Italian leather and contacted local Italian companies.
Melissa started the label meli melo in her London apartment using money she had saved for a flight to Argentina. Melissa, in an era of “it” bags and logos, recognised a need in the luxury accessories market for high-quality handbags that didn’t break the bank or have overbearing labels.
Melissa leveraged her experience on the in-house public relations teams at Harper’s Bazaar, Tanner Krolle, and Asprey to get her label off the ground.
The label quickly became a favourite of celebrities and fashion insiders. Among the first to sport the bags in 2005 were Kate Middleton, Sienna Miller, Pippa Middleton, and Poppy Delevingne, all of whom praised the understated logos, luxurious leather, and classic designs.
