TOP DESTIN, FLORIDA ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS

DESTIN COMMONS SHOPPING AREA

At Destin Commons, a nearby shopping center, there is an outdoor fountain with ground-level spray heads that delivers children random spurts of water to run through to cool off. In addition, children can climb on marine-themed sculptures in the mall’s soft playground.

FRED GANNON ROCKY BAYOU STATE PARK

Twenty minutes north of Destin, at Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou State Park, guests can observe typical Floridian flora and fauna. In addition to Puddin’ Head Lake, a delicate environment that is home to such exotic treasures as the pitcher plant and Florida anise, Rocky Bayou, an arm of the Choctawhatchee Bay, serves as the park’s focal point.

The Sandpine Trail here will take you down to the water’s edge, where you can see otters and dolphins. The park features a playground, boat launch, picnic shelters, and grassy areas perfect for a picnic.

DESTIN FISHING MUSEUM

Seeing as how fishing is so important to Destin’s history, the Destin Fishing Museum is a must-see. The oldest seine-fishing boat, The Primrose, built in 1925, along with antique rods and reels and photographs, provide a glimpse into the fishing culture and daily life of early 20th-century Destin. An exhibit showcasing Gulf fauna and flora is a great way to teach youngsters about this region.

GULFARIUM

Just 15 minutes outside of Destin, the Gulfarium features dolphin and sea lion presentations for kids of all ages. Throughout the day, there are feeding demonstrations where visitors can see river otters, sharks, and penguins. Visitors can also see loggerhead turtles, an alligator, and stingrays.

THE TRACK FAMILY RECREATION CENTER

There’s something fun for the whole family to do at The Track Family Recreation Center. A carousel, Ferris wheel, railway, and swings may all be found at Kids Country. Miniature golfers can try their skills at Surfin’ Safari Golf, a course decorated with replicas of exotic animals.

In addition to its go-karts and bumper cars, The Track also features an arcade. The park features a bungee leap from a height of 65 feet (20 meters) and a skydiving crane for adrenaline seekers.

WARM OCEAN TEMPERATURES

Kids will love to ride the warm waves of the Gulf Coast. The average summer water temperature is 85 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius), so even the tiniest swimmers won’t feel the chill.

A stroll down the beach as the waves lap at your feet is a pleasant way to spend an evening.

GLASS-BOTTOM BOAT CRUISES

Glass-bottom boats are a type of boat that allows guests to see the undersea world without getting wet; they are used on excursions by a number of different companies. There are multiple marinas in Destin from which trips depart.

The journey will hold guests’ interest with dolphin interactions, up-close views of aquatic species including crabs and pufferfish, and informative conversations. Typically tours last approximately two hours, and there are snack and beverage bars available to keep young bellies full.

BIG KAHUNA’S WATER AND ADVENTURE PARK

Big Kahuna’s has over 40 different water attractions, including the Ragin’ Rhino Rapids, the Tiki River Run, and the kid-friendly Pleasure Island, which contains a pass-through waterfall, floating crocodiles, and a water-spraying octopus. Off-the-water activities range from go-carts to thrill rides, and a wave pool and fountains only add to the excitement.

GATOR BEACH

A Gator Experience at Fudpucker’s Restaurant is home to more than a hundred alligators. There is a fenced-in pond with a bridge and an elevated dock where guests can feed the alligators with “gator bait” on a pole.

Children who are feeling particularly daring can participate in an interactive presentation on the pier and pet a live alligator held by a trained professional. Parents, have no fear; we’ve taped the animal’s mouth shut. There is also a section dedicated to wildlife displays.
